Accounting for Mesquite, Nevada owners.

Mesquite is just over the state line, and Nevada's tax system is very different from Utah's. We help Mesquite owners, and Utah businesses that work there, keep the two straight.

Nevada has no income tax, but that isn't the whole story

The City of Mesquite notes that Nevada has no personal or corporate income tax. For an owner moving from Utah, that can be a real benefit. But other costs still apply, and federal income tax is still usually the largest bill. Nevada has its own business taxes to plan for.

The Modified Business Tax applies to wages, at 1.17% for general businesses, after the first $50,000 of quarterly wages. The Commerce Tax applies when Nevada gross revenue exceeds $4,000,000. Most businesses also need a state business license from the Nevada Secretary of State, which costs $200, or $500 for corporations.

Moving, or working on both sides of the line

The line between states matters more than the short drive suggests. If you live in one state and work in the other, your residency, your payroll setup, and where your income is earned all matter. Moving to Nevada doesn't end your Utah tax ties on its own. Our guide to state domicile planning explains what states look for.

Utah contractors and service businesses should also note a local rule. The City of Mesquite requires a business license even if you're based outside city limits, along with a copy of your state license. Vacation home rentals need their own license and pay room tax.

Mesquite's economy leans on gaming, golf, and hospitality, including Mesquite Gaming. Those businesses bring tip reporting, shift-based payroll, and seasonal swings, so accurate payroll and regular forecasting are especially useful.

How we work with Mesquite clients

As an Enrolled Agent, Ethan Park is federally authorized to represent taxpayers before the IRS, and that authority isn't limited by state. We work with Mesquite owners by Zoom or at our St. George office.

What we'd look at first in Mesquite

For a Mesquite owner, we start by confirming where you, your employees, and your revenue actually sit. Then we check your state license, your city license, and whether your payroll reflects the Modified Business Tax.

If you're moving from Utah or running a business across the line, we review your entity and residency before year-end. If you're a Utah company taking work in Mesquite, we confirm your licensing first, then make sure your books separate revenue by state. That keeps each state's rules clear when it's time to file.

Common questions

Questions owners ask us.

Does Nevada have a state income tax?

No. Nevada has no personal or corporate income tax, though businesses may owe the Modified Business Tax and, above $4,000,000 of Nevada gross revenue, the Commerce Tax.

Do I need a Mesquite license if my business is in Utah?

The city says a business license is required even if you're based outside city limits, and it asks for a copy of your Nevada state license.

Will moving to Mesquite end my Utah taxes?

Not automatically. Your domicile depends on your actual ties, and Utah income can still be taxed. Plan the move before you make it.
